Sentimental Anniversary Poetry

Anniversary poetry is a great way to show your spouse you care on your anniversary.

You can include poetry in a card or e-card, read it aloud to your spouse, or incorporate it into a beautiful, creative gift.

You can use poetry specifically for anniversaries, poetry from classic authors, or poetry that you write on your own.

Here are some ideas for poetry for your anniversary, as well as a few poems you may want to use on this special day.

Finding the poetry

There are literally hundreds of places to find free anniversary poems. You'll find examples of anniversary themed poems, such as 50th anniversary poems or funny anniversary poems. There are also plenty of books available and resources online. For classic poems, there are also lots of websites and books available. Just start looking around for love poetry well before your wedding anniversary arrives so that you'll know what you have available to you.

Write your own poetry

Of course, you could always choose to write your own anniversary poetry, as well. It's not as difficult as you might think! Simply start scratching out ideas for things you'd like to say in a poem. You may want to look at the form of other poems and try to mimic it as you write your own. You can also check out books on how to write your own poetry. They often have excellent exercises that can help you create poetry from scratch.

What a wedding anniversary poem should say

Wedding anniversary poetry for your spouse should say basically whatever it is that you feel. Don't just pull a random love poem from Shakespeare out and expect it to match just how you feel. Instead, spend time really looking for a poem that expresses your true feelings. It may take some time, but it will definitely be worth your while in the end.

A few examples

Here are just a few examples of anniversary poetry from modern and classic authors that you might want to use for your wedding anniversary. Feel free to use one of these or to just let them guide you to new ideas for your spouse.

Another year

Another year to create
precious memories together.
Another year to discover
new things to enjoy about each other.
Another year to build
a life rich in love and laughter.
Another year to strengthen
a marriage that defines "forever."
Happy Anniversary!

Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose Worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom:
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

-William Shakespeare

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

- ee cummings

These are just three styles of anniversary poetry that show you the range of possibilities that are out there. The first is sweet and greeting-card like. The second is a classic piece of poetry that most people recognize at least parts of. The final poem is from a popular modern author and uses some interesting contemporary techniques. Each of these poems could be used to create a beautiful anniversary, depending on the circumstances and preferences of the married couple.
