How To Write Anniversary Speeches

Writing anniversary speeches isn't as hard as you may think it is. Most people would be daunted by thought of writing a speech, but this task can be made very easy. With your wealth of experiences and time together as a couple, you've got plenty of ideas to draw upon. Simply follow these tips for writing your speech.

First and foremost, think about your audience.

They're your closest family and friends and so are the easiest people to impress.

They will be captivated by your content because they are genuinely interested in what you have to say.

The last thing they will do is laugh or judge you.

Tips for writing anniversary speeches

  • Give yourself time to write your speech. They often need a bit of preparation and giving yourself time will ensure your content and delivery is great.

  • The most important thing your speech should do is sound genuine. To do this, make sure you just be yourself. If you try and do or be something you're not, then it probably won't work. Be yourself in your writing.

  • Try and keep the sentences in your speech natural. Don't use fancy words or phrases that you wouldn't normally say as it won't sound like you.

  • Where possible and appropriate, speak from the heart. Write down your thoughts and feelings about what your subject matter (wife, your life together, children, etc) and include them in the speech. Most of your audience will feel the same and so you'll instantly build a connection.

  • Start with a strong opening, perhaps a quote, a short (inoffensive) joke or some kind words.

  • The middle section should be purposeful. Include here the things you need to say.

  • Anniversary speeches should always end with a memorable conclusion such as kind words to the happy couple.

  • For each hundred words you write, your speech will be approximately one minute.

  • Don't make the speech any longer than 5 -10 minutes.

  • Make clear and simple notes so you can prompt yourself as necessary.

  • Always thank the previous speaker if there is one.

For your speech, start to make some notes based on the tips above. Then craft them into an order that feels right. Perhaps leave it for a day or two and then come back to it. Rewrite it, re-order it or change it completely. Fresh eyes will give you fresh clarity.

Once you're happy with the speech, try it out on someone. Ask their opinion and then keep crafting until you're happy with it.
