Typical Anniversary Toasts

Anniversary toasts are one of the most important parts of anniversary parties and celebrations. They draw in the audience and honour the couple.

Some toasts are made by close friends and family members of the couple, but it's custom too for each spouse to make a toast in honour of the other.

If you're a bit nervous about writing and making your toast, here are a few things to get you going.

First, we'll talk about what typical anniversary toasts include, and then we can help you make yours different and memorable.

Typically, anniversary toasts are emotional and are focused on the couple's life and family together. Normally, a toast will include lots of memories about the couple. If it's coming from friends or family members, it might also talk about what an impact the couple has had on the speaker's life.

When tht toast comes from one of the spouses, it will normally focus on honouring the other spouse, their relationship, children and the lives they built together.

It's opporutnity for the couple to express their love for one another as well as their appreciation for friends and family members who have been with them throughout the years.

Making your toast different

You don't want your toast to stray too far from these basic ideas. The point, after all, is to honour a couple and a marriage with your short speech. However, if you want to make your toast a bit different and more memorable, here are some ideas to try:

  • Set your toast to music, or make it into a poem about the happy couple.
  • Create a slideshow that goes with your toast. It could include some quotes from your toast or simply pictures of the people and events you're going to talk about.
  • Personalise your toast with very detailed stories about the couple.
  • Read a poem, a quote from a famous person, or even part of the couple's wedding vows as a beginning or ending for your toast.

These ideas will all help you make your toast a little different from what people normally expect. This will help your speech stand out from normal toasts given at anniversary parties.

Drawing on the past

One of the most important ways to get your audience engaged in your toast is to tell stories. People love stories of all kinds, and we can't help but be drawn in by a good one. This is even truer if your audience is a part of some of your stories, which is likely if the party is a gathering of all the people who have been a part of the couple's lives. Stories from the couple's past can make the toast funnier, more emotional, or more interesting. Here are a few ways to take things from the past and to turn them into material for anniversary toasts:

  • Remember the couple's wedding day. You can use pictures or particular stories from the wedding day. You can also go back to find readings, verses, or vows that the couple used on that day, and work these things into your toast.
  • Tell stories about the couple's family. Chances are likely that there are tons of funny and emotional things that have happened in the couple's life together. These things make great material for speeches, especially if the people involved in the stories are all there together.
  • Tell stories about the couple's ups and downs. This is best if you're one of the spouses giving the toast. Talk about where you've been and how far you've come as a couple and a family. These events are good ways to make your speech more emotional.
  • If you're the spouse, talk about how much you and your spouse have grown together over the years. You might tell stories about your very early marriage and contrast them with more recent stories that show how you deal with things differently or how you've grown.

Material for big milestones

Most couples are likely to have anniversary parties on major anniversaries like 25 and 50. At this point, they've been together so long that there's a wealth of material to draw from for anniversary toasts. On these really special anniversaries, you need to say really special things. You might draw from quotes, poetry or songs for these toasts. On these anniversaries, you can also talk about what's kept the couple together for so many years. Another idea is to talk about what things were like when they were first married. If it was decades ago, everything from the cost of living to the way weddings were done was different. It can be fun to contrast these things with how things are now.

Anniversary toasts shouldn't be boring or dull. By the time a couple has been together long enough to through an anniversary party, there's plenty of interesting material in their own lives. Whether you're a friend, a family member, or part of the happy couple, these ideas will help you take your toast from typical to wonderful.
